BIRTHDAY BONANZA FROM ETIHAD GUEST

Etihad Airways' award-winning loyalty programme, Etihad Guest, has unveiled a series of spectacular promotions to celebrate its first anniversary.

The 'Birthday Bonanza' prizes include tickets to the Formula 1 grand prix in Belgium and Italy, which feature the Etihad-Aldar Spyker Formula 1 team, as well as a trip to the ' Boeing Experience' in Seattle, USA.

AIRLINES INCREASE FLIGHTS TO BUDAPEST

This coming winter will see a massive increase in flights from the UK to Budapest from airports that have not previously served the city. The addition of 15 Ryanair services from Liverpool, Bristol, East Midlands and Glasgow Prestwick plus the services by EasyJet, Wizz Air, Malev and British Airways from Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow will boost both business and leisure traffic to Budapest.

HOTELS RATES RISE IN EUROPE

Business and leisure travellers have been paying more for their hotel rooms so far this year according to a survey from Deloitte. The HotelBenchmark survey shows that European hotel rates have risen by 5.8% this year.

Visitors to the Americas Cup held in Valencia helped hoteliers increased average room rates by a staggering 33.4%. Istanbul hoteliers have benefited from increased demand from a range of conferences, trade shows and sporting events. Lisbon has continued to perform well with the city also hosting a number of conferences, including the biennial Alimentaria International Food Show in May, which attracted 40,000 visitors.

London did not disappoint either with business and leisure travel to the UK’s capital remaining strong. As a result London continues to achieve the highest occupancy in Europe at 80.5%. London also had the second highest average room rate at €185.00 with Moscow topping the list at €263.00.

The region continues to benefit from robust economic performance – particularly across the euro area – which is helping drive both business and leisure demand for hotels. The outlook for the rest of the year looks promising however concerns remain over continuing rising credit levels and the prospect of further interest rate rises, which would place pressure on consumers discretionary spending and dampen leisure travel.

CX UPS ANTE TO AUSTRALIA

Passengers on the ‘kangaroo route’ to Australia now have extra options as Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) add extra flights to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth from Hong Kong this autumn.

Melbourne becomes a three-times-daily service from October 1, while flights to Adelaide will become a daily service, operating on a triangular routing through Melbourne. There will also be an extra flight to Perth every Sunday increasing the service to five-times-a-week service with effect from October 28.
 
The extra services coincide with the imminent arrival of the new fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which will include the new three-class long-haul cabin product.

 

Cathay also fly 3 times a day to Sydney and once a day to Brisbane and Cairns. 

Cathay Pacific operates four non-stop flights a day from Heathrow Terminal 3 to Hong Kong International Airport.

EASYJET LAUNCH MORE SCOTTISH SERVICES

EasyJet is to fly from Glasgow International Airport to Paris Charles De Gaulle from October 29 with one ways fares from £21.99. The route is expected to be popular for business travellers as well as those taking a short break to the French capital.


EasyJet will also start services from Edinburgh to Paris (CDG) on September 10, Krakow on October 29 and Gdansk on October 30.

PASSENGERS SAY SINGAPORE IS BEST

Skytrax have announced the results of the 2006/7 World Airline Survey, with Singapore Airlines taking the top spot as Airline of the Year.

“It was our longest running and largest passenger survey ever" said Edward Plaisted (CEO of survey organisation, Skytrax). "We received over 14 million eligible nominations around the world during the 11 month survey, further underlining the project's title of being the World's Largest Passenger Survey.

"As with the majority of the survey studies we conduct, the World Airline Survey is primarily focussed on the quality attributes that different airlines offer - be it in the airport or the onboard environment. Of course, in making a nomination for a Best Airline based on the standards of product and service, the survey participants will pay due regard to the value-for-money equation, but we do not set out to evaluate which airlines might have the largest network or most frequent schedules. A code share agreement between Copa Airlines and AeroMexico begins today, August 1st, 2007.

ETIHAD TO SPONSOR HARLEQUINS

Abu-Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has signed a three-year deal to be the main sponsor of English premiership rugby union team, Harlequins.

The ‘seven figure’ deal is Etihad’s first major sporting sponsorship deal in the UK and the biggest in Harlequins’ history. It will see the airline’s logo emblazoned on Harlequins’ famous quartered shirt as well as on the roof of their Twickenham Stoop stadium in south west London. KD AVIA DEVELOP BALTIC CONNECTION

The Russian airline, KD avia, has further developed its hub and spoke operation at Kaliningrad Airport on the Baltic coast, with easy connections from a dozen European cities to 10 major Russian destinations, each with populations over 1 Million.

From the UK the Boeing 737-300 aircraft services are flown three times weekly from London Gatwick on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday with easy connections and checked through baggage to Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Ufa, Volgograd, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Omsk and Kazan.

AIR INDIA'S NEW 777 IS NEW YORK BOUND

Air India has taken delivery of its first 777-200LR (Longer Range) Worldliner airplane. This is the first 777 from Air India's order of 68 Boeing jetliners and they will receive 6 more 777’s this year.

Air India will use the 777-200LR to provide direct, non-stop flights between the United States and India. It begins service to New York's John F. Kennedy from Mumbai, India, on 1 August 2007 and will offer three classes with flat bed seats in first and business and larger economy seating.

To celebrate 20 years of flying to China, ANA has decorated a 767-300 aircraft in a panda motif.  'Fly! Panda', as the aircraft was dubbed in a naming-competition held among elementary school children across Japan, lifted off from Tokyo's Narita Airport yesterday, headed for Beijing.  For the next two years it will be a regular visitor to the Chinese capital, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other major destinations in China.

VIRGIN BLUE NAME TRANS PACIFIC ARM

V Australia is the name chosen for Virgin Blue's new long-haul airline that will commence transpacific services to the US late next year with a 777-300ER. Virgin Blue cannot use the Virgin name outside Australia as part of an agreement reached when Singapore Airlines took a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1999. With speculation continuing that SIA may sell its stake in Virgin Atlantic, the name V Australia will allow a seamless rebranding to Virgin Australia. The carrier has committed to an initial fleet of seven 777-300ERs and holds eight options. It is expected to announce further product details later this year.

 

The new name was chosen from among nearly 6,000 entries solicited in a contest.

CABIN OVERHAUL FOR QANTAS

Qantas (QF) unveiled a radical overhaul of its international long-haul in-flight product ahead of the delivery of its first A380 next year.

A new premium economy class featuring 42-inch pitch, a new Panasonic IFE system, enhanced connectivity in all cabins and upgraded lie-flat business class beds are the main features of a makeover that will be offered on the A380s and QF's 747-400s starting in February.

The carrier will configure its A380s with just 450 seats, 14 first class "suites," 72 business, 32 premium economy and 332 economy. First and economy will be on the lower deck with business and premium economy on the upper deck.

The A380 will feature self-service bars and lounges in first and business classes, a self-service bar in premium economy and four such bars in coach. All classes will have wireless connectivity, in-seat e-mail, Internet, telephone and SMS along with in-seat power, USB and R145 ports.

On the 747-400, premium economy will be on the main deck in a 2-4-2 configuration, which is how business class started when QF pioneered it in 1979.

Qantas also unveiled a sleeker, updated version of its iconic kangaroo logo, which some feared might disappear all together.

FIRST FLIGHT FARES GO TO CHARITY

The first commercial flight of Singapore Airlines new Airbus A380 will be from Singapore to Sydney and return. It will take place in October 2007 and it would seem everyone wants to be on it. So in an unprecedented move Singapore Airlines will auction the seats on eBay with all proceeds from the sale being donated to charities.

Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Chew Choon Seng, said, “The first commercial A380 flight will be a moment in aviation history. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, on an aircraft that will mark a new chapter in air travel.

“And while we will celebrate the event, we also wish to remember the people who are less fortunate and can be assisted by the charities to which all the proceeds will go,” Mr Chew said.

The proceeds of the auction will be split evenly between Singapore’s Community Chest, the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney and to Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders.

Although the actual date of the flight is still to be confirmed Singapore Airlines and eBay plan for the auction to be conducted some weeks prior to the flight and we will inform readers once a date has been fixed.

United Airlines has revealed details of its new international United Business experience that will provide customers with more space to work, sleep or relax during long overseas flights.

International United Business seat amenities will include:

    *Forward and rear-facing seats configured to allow customers to completely recline 180º to a full 6-foot, 4-inch bed.
*Four-way lumbar support and six-way adjustable headrest.
*An ottoman providing additional storage for a laptop or other personal items.
*Ergonomically designed tray table that comfortably accommodates a laptop and other items.
*iPod adapter that enables customers to play their own music and videos on the seat's entertainment unit while recharging the iPod.
*Universal Serial Bus (USB) port to charge personal electronic devices, such as personal digital assistants, mobile phones and digital cameras.
*Standard 110v power outlets requiring no adapter.
*Adjustable LED reading light with dimmer.
*Noise cancelling headphones.

United will begin introducing the new international United Business along with its previously announced First Class Suites in this autumn and the entire fleet will be fitted out by 2009.

NEW SUITES AND CLUB FOR INTERCONTINENTAL PARK LANE

Following a £76 million refurbishment, the InterContinental London Park Lane recently opened 60 elegant designer suites, including four signature suites.

The property has also opened the doors of its long awaited Club InterContinental. Located on the seventh floor, the purpose-built Club InterContinental is spread over 223 square metres and features floor-to-ceiling, double-glazed bay windows that provide striking views of London's historic landscapes.

There are four new signature suites, Royal, London, Cinema and Wellington. They come with Bang & Olufsen's 42 inch flat screen televisions in the main rooms and 28-36 inch flat screens in the bedrooms. In addition, the rooms are all fitted with high speed internet service, Bose sound systems and I-pod docks.

In addition to the four signature suites, the hotel has created 56 suites ranging from the intimate Studio Suites to the Palace Suites. In each, the living space has a relaxing sofa and a designated business area complete with high-speed Internet access. 21st Century creature comforts including a 28 inch Bang & Olufsen flat screen TV and Bose sound system are carefully housed behind dark and light oak cabinetry and wall panelling.

HYATT OPEN 7TH CHINA PROPERTY

Hyatt will officially open its Hyatt on the Bund, Shanghai in early October. Part of the Grand Hyatt portfolio, the hotel is situated at the northern end of the legendary Bund, arguably the most famous thoroughfare in Shanghai, if not China. To maximise its prime location on the western banks of the Huangpu River, the cutting-edge hotel has been angled so that all rooms will benefit from a spectacular view of either the historical architecture down the Bund or modern skyscraper-lined Pudong across the river.

The hotel will house a total of 631 guest rooms, including 52 suites, split between East and West towers will feature rotating flat-screen TVs, DVD players and high-speed wired and wireless broadband Internet access.

Hyatt on the Bund will be the seventh Hyatt hotel to open in Mainland China, following Grand Hyatt Beijing, Grand Hyatt Shanghai, Hyatt Regency Tianjin, Hyatt Regency Xian, Hyatt Regency Hangzhou and Hyatt Regency Dongguan. Twelve more Hyatt hotels are scheduled to open in China in the next few years.

SURCHARGE FROM SWISS

With Lufthansa having already announced a rise to their fuel surcharge, sister company SWISS will increase their surcharge on long haul flights from 102 to 122 Swiss francs (£47.75 and £49.20 respectively). Internal and European surcharges will remain the same at 32 Swiss francs (£12.90). The increase will take effect from 26th July.
