FIRST PASSENGERS ARRIVE AT TERMINAL 5
A new chapter in the history of Heathrow Airport begins today when at 04.50hrs, the first passengers arrived at Terminal 5, from Hong Kong on flight BA26.
Mark Bullock, Managing Director of BAA Heathrow said: “This is an incredibly exciting day for BAA and one which marks a turning point for Heathrow. We have waited over 20 years to welcome passengers to Terminal 5 and during that time Heathrow has got increasingly congested. Terminal 5 signifies a new beginning for Heathrow and I am immensely proud that we open the doors of this magnificent building today, exactly when we said we would.
Designed for 21st century travel, every aspect of the terminal, from the arrangement of check-in desks and high-tech baggage system, through to the 9,000 seats, has been designed for passengers’ comfort and ease. Over 30,000 square metres of glazing provides a light and airy environment with clear views across the airfield. Located beneath the terminal is a modern and spacious rail station, providing direct transport links to London including the Heathrow Express service and London Underground’s Piccadilly Line .
The start of operations at Terminal 5 signals a new beginning for Heathrow; it will provide the airport with much needed additional capacity so that the transformation of existing terminal facilities can continue at pace. Over the next five years, BAA will invest around £4bn in a development programme that includes closing Terminal 2 and replacing it with a modern, energy efficient terminal.
Terminal 5 is one of the most successful construction projects ever undertaken in the UK. The hugely complex programme of work was carried out on a 260ha site, situated between with the world’s busiest runways. A former Thames Water sludge works, the site now includes Terminal 5A – the UK’s largest free-standing structure - and its satellite building Terminal 5B. A second satellite building, Terminal 5C will open in 2010. Transport

EMIRATES TO GO MOBILE
Despite the majority of passengers surveyed over the last few years being against the use of mobile phones in-flight, Emirates has made a bold and somewhat controversial move in becoming the first major airline in the world to commercially launch an in-flight mobile telephone service.
The airline will be investing some US$27 million to fit its fleet with the AeroMobile system which ensures that passenger mobile phones operate at their absolute minimum power, thereby allowing their safe use on the aircraft. A second Emirates aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, has already been installed with the AeroMobile system and will be in operation very shortly.
The service will only be activated when the aircraft is at cruising altitude and the cabin crew will have full control over the system, including the ability to prevent voice calls at certain times such as during night flights. The number of calls that may be made at any one time is also limited to a maximum of five or six calls, the same number as for the current in-seat phones.
Emirates cabin staff and information videos will advise and encourage passengers to switch their phones to silent / vibrate mode when used in the aircraft.
In addition to calls, the service will also allow passengers to send and receive text messages, with charges in line with premium international roaming rates. Users will be billed on their regular phone bills by their own service providers as with any other roaming call.
Emirates and AeroMobile will be working to add further features such as the ability for BlackBerry-type email and other GPRS data applications later in 2008 and also to integrate AeroMobile with Emirates' ICE inflight entertainment system.
On aircraft where the AeroMobile system is not installed, existing rules banning the use of mobile phones by passengers remain in force at all times. Mobile phones must remain switched off for the duration of the flight in accordance with current aviation regulatory requirements.

CAAC GETS TOUGH WITH CARRIERS
China’s regulatory body the CAAC said it has adopted measures to curb flight delays in advance of this summer's Olympic Games.
According to the regulator, Chinese airlines based in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other Olympic-related cities are being ordered to have one or two backup aircraft on hand to guarantee on time performance. Carriers cancelling flights during the period must transfer passengers to other airlines and cover their fares in full.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES FIRST A380 FLIGHT TO LONDON
Singapore Airlines, has set yet another milestone in the world of civil aviation, as the Airline today flies the world’s first commercial A380 flight to Europe.
The inaugural Singapore Airlines A380 flight to London, SQ308, took off from Singapore’s Changi Airport at 0900 hours today (18 March 2008). The flight will land in London’s Heathrow Airport at 1505 hours today (all times local).
Singapore Airlines General Manager UK and Ireland, Marvin Tan said: “The arrival of the first commercial A380 flight to London will be a proud moment for Singapore Airlines but also for British aviation. The Singapore Airlines A380 has wings made in Britain, it is powered by Britain and its interiors are designed in Britain. The new aircraft also represents a significant step towards greener flying. It is 20% more fuel-efficient and has a noise footprint half that of the B747-400 it is designed to replace. Our aircraft will also carry a third more passengers than the B747-400, thus enabling us to satisfy demand without having to increase the number of flights.”
Among the distinguished guests welcoming the A380’s historic arrival at London Heathrow Airport will be Minister of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Pat McFadden MP and Aviation Minister Jim Fitzpatrick MP.
Mr McFadden commented: “Today’s flight represents a significant milestone. The Airbus A380 is a remarkable aircraft – quieter, cleaner, smarter and greener than existing commercial planes. It is a privilege to be here to witness its first ever commercial flight to not just the UK, but to Europe. The aerospace sector is very important part of UK manufacturing and this journey is a chance to celebrate the contribution of more than 400 British companies to the A380 programme. I wish the aircraft, the airport and the airline a long and successful future working together.” Transport

EL AL- IMPROVED INTERNET CHECK-IN AT HEATHROW
Heathrow is the first airport in the entire El Al network to allow passengers to check-in online, print their Airport Authority compatible final boarding pass and, if travelling with hand baggage only, proceed direct to their aircraft departure gate to clear El Al security. Passengers with baggage should go to the designated baggage drop-off desk.
This new development is largely down to the multi-million dollar investment El Al has made in cutting edge security technology. The technology is geared to provide a less intrusive, but still robust security procedure, expand the options available to passengers and provide them with a better airport experience.
The benefits of internet check-in are that it can be conducted from 3 to 24 hours prior to departure from home, office or hotel and will save time, a valuable commodity especially for business travellers, at Heathrow where passengers with luggage can now arrive 2 hours 15 minutes rather than 3 hours as previous. Carry on luggage passengers should arrive at the airport 1hour 30 minutes prior to departure.

JAMES BIDWELL WELCOMES OPENING OF T5
Visit London, the capital’s official visitor organisation, has today welcomed the opening of Terminal 5 at London Heathrow saying it will alleviate the pressures experienced at Heathrow. Visit London Chief Executive James Bidwell said:
“T5 will provide visitors to London and the UK with a spectacular first impression and alleviate the pressure experienced at Heathrow, the world’s busiest airport. “The terminal’s smoother check-in process and state-of-the-art baggage management system will certainly better the tourist experience and should help improve the airport’s international reputation.”
London is the number one city destination in the world for international travel and in 2006* welcomed a record 15.6 million overseas visitors. Visit London forecasts that 2007 will also result in a record year for overseas visitors to the capital – 16 million visitors.
“London is the gateway to the UK. Almost 50% of all overseas visitors to the capital visit London and around 75% come through London’s airports. The visitor experience commences from the moment of arrival and by improving the quality of its welcome, London will be better placed to maintain its competitive advantage and to compete effectively in the global tourism market,” Mr Bidwell said.

COVENTRY AIRPORT - NEW LINK GDANSK
Coventry Airport is delighted to welcome the first Wizz Air flight from Gdansk in northern Poland, which will be arriving this Saturday. Wizz Air commences the new three times weekly (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) services to Gdansk on Saturday 15 March, using a 180 seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
Chris Orphanou, Chief Executive Officer of Coventry Airport, said: “We are delighted that Wizz Air is complementing its existing services to Katowice with the introduction of new flights to the important Polish commercial centre of Gdansk. The West Midlands region has strong historical links with Poland and these new flights are great news for the Polish community, business and leisure travellers.”
“Forward bookings on this route look very healthy,” said John Stephenson of Wizz Air. “Our load factors are extremely promising and we’re certain the Gdansk route will be equally as popular as our existing services to Katowice.”
Gdansk, situated on the southern coast of Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea, is the sixth largest city in Poland and can trace its history back to AD980. The city has been a principle seaport since medieval times and subsequently a major ship-building centre. Gdansk is famous worldwide as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement which, under the leadership of Lech Walesa, played a major role in bringing an end to Communist rule in Poland.
