NEW ‘BUBBLE BAR’ CONCEPT UNVEILED AT CONRAD CHICAGO

The Terrace at Conrad, Chicago’s premier al fresco dining experience, will reopen this month and is tipped to be the city’s new hot spot. This season, the Terrace at the Conrad Chicago offers guests refreshing spirits from the exclusive ‘Bubble Bar,’ which provides effervescent blended alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including several trendy new bubble teas. Also new at The Terrace this season is Executive Chef Zafar’s StaxX menu: an innovative menu bringing dinner to new heights by stacking multiple meal selections in separate eco-chic bamboo steamers.

The Bubble Bar, a new addition to The Terrace at Conrad’s full bar, includes several varieties of bubble tea, a beverage of Taiwanese origin that is quickly rising to fame in North America, which combines a tea (usually black or green) with a variety of fruit juices, ice, pulp and occasionally milk. In addition to bubble tea, the bar offers several blended mixtures of fresh fruit juices and purees, syrup, shaved ice, spirits (optional), creating a smooth and refreshing cocktail. The distinctive garnishes of all the Bubble Bar drinks are homemade tapioca pearls, which create the necessary “bubbling” effect. The current Bubble Bar menu, which will expand throughout the summer, features selections like mango delight with mango puree, complemented with fresh squeezed citruses and rum; and the sinister framboise with sweet raspberry puree, fresh lime juice and vodka.

MACDONALD RE-LAUNCH MEETINGS@

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is re-launching its conference and meetings product, Meetings@. The initiative, first introduced to the market in 2005, has already contributed to a 10% rise year on year in the group’s meeting and event revenue, but in 2008 is being evolved to stay in tune with the changing needs of the meeting planner.

The refreshed Meetings@ will continue to follow the same principals of, attention to detail, fresh and innovative food, and a consistent complete meetings product, throughout the group’s four and five star properties. The re-launch includes additional facilities in meeting rooms, enhanced customer service, and crucially, closer liaison with meeting planners, ensuring Meetings@ remains in sync with their needs.

“Meetings@ was a tremendous success when it was launched and whilst it was proving to be very popular, we were conscious that we couldn’t let it become tired in what is a very competitive market place. This investment has shaken the cobwebs away and enabled us to not only enhance our core product but reinvigorate the passion in our teams,” comments Andrew Watson, Senior Marketing Manager at Macdonald Hotels & Resorts. “Meetings@ is a seal of quality that meeting planners can trust, wherever they book in the UK.”

WEB IMPROVEMENTS FOR EL AL

El Al who is celebrating its 60th anniversary in September has announced the launch of its newly upgraded website www.elal.co.uk, including an express online check-in service for London Heathrow.

One of the most important changes has seen the introduction of a simpler and more flexible and user-friendly booking system, designed to enhance the customer online booking experience. Previously, passengers were only able to see the prices for the flights on their selected dates but in a significant change, the site will now also allow passengers to see prices for preceding and following days all on one simple screen.

The upgrade will be of particular benefit to leisure travellers with flexible dates, as it will now be much quicker and simpler to find the best fares in a single, rather than multiple, search.

In the second big change, London Heathrow airport has become the first airport outside Israel to offer El Al passengers an express online check-in service. The new service will enable passengers to check-in online between three and 24 hours prior to departure, pre-select their seats, print their boarding passes and then proceed straight to the bag drop-off or departure gate security on arrival at the airport.

The new web facility will provide a further huge benefit to passengers using the twice-daily London Heathrow-Tel Aviv service by enabling them to reduce their overall travel time. The move is expected to be particularly welcomed by frequent business travellers using the route but also popular with leisure guests looking to reduce airport waiting times.

LOT MOVES HOME

LOT Polish Airlines has completed its moves to Terminal 2 at its home hub at Warsaw’s Frederic Chopin Airport.

The Polish national carrier moved its international flights to the new US$220 million facility last month and completes the move with the switch of its domestic flights.

The new terminal, with 24 gates, more than doubles the capacity of the airport to 12 million passengers a year. A key benefit to passengers is to significantly improve transfers, which should now involve only a short walk between gates.

LOT is now the only airline flying from London-Heathrow to Warsaw, a route it operates three times a day.

The airline’s regional director for UK and Ireland, Slawomir Noszczak, commented: ‘The transfer of our international flights to the new terminal went without any major hitches and we are now delighted to bring all our operations under one roof, with the move of domestic flights. This will be a major bonus for UK travellers flying on to other cities within Poland or on our international network, as well as smoothing transfer for those returning to the UK.’

LOT flies to eight cities within Poland, as well as to 60 destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Europe, with the new destination of Beijing added in March.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CIPRIANI

Orient Express’s Hotel Cipriani, on the lagoon island of Guidecca in Venice, is 50 years old on 26th May 2008.

To mark the beginning of its golden year, the first five guests to book direct through the hotel’s website on 26th May for a future stay, will pay for their first night at the Euro equivalent of what it would have cost on the opening night in 1958, when a double room started at 8,000 Lire (approx £2.56).

Celebrations of the 50th anniversary will also extend beyond Venice, when the Orient-Express British Pullman train in the UK will serve a special Cipriani dinner onboard, cooked by the hotel’s chef Renato Piccolotto, on 24th May 2008. HONG KONG EXPRESS AIRWAYS - NEW JAPAN ROUTES

Following the introduction of direct flights to Okinawa earlier this month, Hong Kong Express Airways has launched its second scheduled service to Japan: a new three times weekly direct flight between Hong Kong and Kagoshima, the only direct service available between the two cities.

The launch follows just days after the airline’s introduction of chartered services to Okayama and precedes the commencement of scheduled direct services to Hiroshima later this week. Hiroshima will be the airline’s third scheduled service between Hong Kong and Japan, and will operate twice weekly (every Thursday and Sunday) from May 1st.

The slew of new routes is part of Hong Kong Express Airways’ drive to capture a share of the Japanese market following liberalisation of the country’s air traffic policy earlier this year. “By providing direct flights between Hong Kong and interesting destinations, we offer more choices and great convenience for travellers who want to explore new destinations. We have seen already growth on our Okinawa route and I believe that we will see the same with these new destinations,” said Mr. Ronnie Choi, President of Hong Kong Express Airways.

LOT PLANS EXTRA CAPACITY TO HANDLE HEATHROW BOOM

Larger aircraft are to be introduced by LOT Polish Airlines on its London-Heathrow to Warsaw service to cope with booming business class traffic. The Polish national carrier has recorded growth of more than 50 per cent* in executive travellers since the introduction of its summer schedule (March 30 2008), when it became the only carrier flying to Warsaw from Heathrow. British Airways has shifted its Warsaw flights to Gatwick.

From June, LOT will replace its current 108-seat Boeing 737-500s with the larger 400 range, offering 147 seats on its peak time services. LOT’s UK and Ireland regional director, Slawomir Noszczak, commented: ‘We always believed that business travellers would want to continue to fly to Warsaw from Heathrow and our exceptional sales figures speak for themselves. ‘Business class sales are booming and we need additional capacity to meet demand. The larger 737-400s will undoubtedly help us meet it, particularly as we have a flexible business class cabin configuration.’

LOT has also recently introduced online check-in for Warsaw-bound passengers to ease their passage through Heathrow’s Terminal 1. The summer schedule also saw LOT resuming services to Beijing after an absence of almost 10 years.

MARRIOTT INTRODUCES RANGE OF NEW DINING CONCEPTS

As part of its £120m ‘Nip and Tuck” refurbishment programme, Marriott Hotels is introducing an exciting and extensive range of new dining and restaurant concepts in a major upgrade of its food and beverage offering. Each new concept is specifically designed to meet the needs and requirements of particular hotel and guest profiles.

New restaurants vary in design and food offering, though all reflect a move toward natural, healthy and locally-sourced ingredients as well as an ambience of casual relaxation.

Already in operation at the Heathrow/Windsor Marriott Hotel and London Marriott Hotel Regent’s Park, Brasserie Centrale is designed to give the look and feel of a contemporary French Mediterranean style of brasserie.  Created to provide classical and consistent food which everyone enjoys, Brasserie Centrale serves food in a rejuvenating and refreshing atmosphere.

Five UK Marriott hotels will also gain their own bespoke restaurants. The Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel will feature the Highcliff Grill, a restaurant offering grilled seafood to reflect its location overlooking the bay, whilst the Marriott Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club will offer its guests dishes made with locally sourced ingredients at its 5ive restaurant, named after the five human senses.

The Waltham Abbey Marriott Hotel will feature Dahlila, a new restaurant that provides its guests with all the excitement and drama of cooking via an open show kitchen and an emphasis on natural products. Milgate’s will be at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel and Country Club whilst cLevel, featuring a strong emphasis on seafood, opens at the Portsmouth Marriott Hotel.

Whilst some of the new restaurants are already completed and in operation, roll-out will continue across Marriott Hotels’ portfolio until the end of this year.
